Eggnog is a festive drink that is a mixture of eggs, egg yolks, sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Its flavor is often enhanced by adding some brandy, and a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon to the top. It is easy to make and doesn't require any special ingredients.
Eggnog is a sweet and creamy custard-like beverage infused with the honey-sharp taste of brandy. The texture is thick and creamy, like melted vanilla ice cream. It's often served in small crystal tumblers because of its richness and its undeniable deliciousness as a treat.
Eggnog was once called milk punch, a mixture of milk, sugar, and brandy. It was served only by the wealthy because of its cost. Since it was a sign of wealth to serve the beverage, diners would often make toasts to long life and prosperity when they drank it.
First, you can whisk the egg yolk and sugar together until light and creamy. Second, combine the heavy whipping cream, milk, and nutmeg in a saucepan, and heat over medium-high, often stirring until the mixture reaches a bare simmer. Next, whisk in a big spoonful of the hot milk into the egg mixture, while stirring vigorously. Then, whisk the mixture constantly for just a few minutes, until it is slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the brandy. Next, pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. Finally, sprinkle with nutmeg and garnish with a cinnamon roll.
