Types of Coffee Bean & Their Characteristics

July 18, 2022

Did you know that there are four main species of coffee beans? Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa have unique tastes and can create a distinctive brew!

Arabica Coffee

Arabica beans are full of flavour and have a strong aroma. These beans are among the most popular type of coffee beans. They are also considered higher quality beans. Over 60% of coffee beans in our world are of the Arabica variety.

Robusta Coffee

Robusta beans have a smooth texture and taste like chocolate. These beans belong to the second most popular type of coffee beans. They are also both hardy and disease-resistant. If you're looking for a really strong coffee, try out Robusta beans. Their caffeine content is much higher than that of Arabica beans, so they’re perfect when you need the extra boost.

Liberica Coffee

Liberica beans are one of the hardest types of coffee beans to find. They are larger than other beans and have an irregular shape. Some have described their aroma as uniquely smoky, while others say these beans have a fruity and floral smell.

Excelsa Coffee

Excelsa beans are mainly grown in Southeast Asia and account for about 7% of the world's coffee. They are sweet, fruity, and tart, making them ideal for adding stronger, deeper flavours to coffee blends.
