What is a Macchiato?

A macchiato is an espresso-based coffee drink that originates from Italy, where "macchiato" means "stained" or "spotted," reflecting its unique preparation. It consists of a shot of espresso "stained" with a small amount of steamed milk, creating a balance between the strong, bold flavor of the coffee and the creamy sweetness of the milk. This specific ratio of espresso to milk distinguishes a macchiato from other espresso drinks.

Types of Macchiatos

1. Espresso Macchiato: This is the traditional macchiato, made by adding a small amount of steamed milk or milk foam to a shot of espresso. The result is a strong coffee flavor with just a hint of creaminess, perfect for those who enjoy the robust taste of espresso but want a slight mellowing effect.
   
   
2. Latte Macchiato: Contrary to the espresso macchiato, the latte macchiato involves "staining" steamed milk with espresso. In this version, a glass of steamed milk is prepared first, and then a shot of espresso is poured over it. This creates a visually appealing layered effect, with the milk at the bottom and the espresso on top. The latte macchiato has a more pronounced milk flavor and a smoother, creamier texture.
   
   

A macchiato differs from other popular coffee drinks like cappuccinos and lattes primarily in its milk-to-espresso ratio. While a cappuccino consists of equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam, and a latte is made with more steamed milk and a small amount of foam, a macchiato has significantly less milk, allowing the espresso to remain the dominant flavor.

Make a Macchiato at Home

Ingredients:

• 1 shot of espresso
• 1-2 teaspoons of steamed milk or milk foam

Equipment:

• Espresso machine
• Milk frother or steam wand

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Espresso: Brew a single shot of rich, concentrated espresso.
2. Steam the Milk: Froth a small amount of milk until smooth and creamy with a light foam on top. You only need a couple of teaspoons of milk foam.
3. Combine: Pour the espresso into an espresso cup. Gently add 1-2 teaspoons of the milk foam on top to “stain” the espresso.
4. Serve: Enjoy your espresso macchiato immediately while it's hot.
5. For a latte macchiato, steam your milk first, pour it into a glass, and then gently add the espresso shot to achieve the layered effect.
