Why We Use Coffee Filter Paper - Healthier, Cleaner Brew

When it comes to brewing a delicious cup of coffee, most people focus on the beans, the roast, or the machine. But one of the most underrated elements in the process is the filter - specifically, the filter paper used in your drip coffee maker.

At Wabilogic, every drip coffee maker we design is built with care, simplicity, and purpose. That’s why, unlike many other machines on the market, we deliberately chose not to include a permanent metal filter. Instead, we include a trial pack of Melitta® coffee filter paper - a choice rooted in health, flavor, tradition, and respect for coffee culture.

Here’s everything you need to know about why filter paper matters, and why we believe it’s the smarter, healthier, and more flavorful choice for your daily brew.

What did Melitta Bentz invent?

Melitta Bentz

Did you know that Melitta®, the very name on our coffee makers, was the first to invent coffee filter paper?

In 1908, Melitta Bentz - a German housewife and coffee lover - grew tired of the gritty, over-extracted coffee of her time. With a creative spark, she took a piece of her son’s blotting paper, punched holes in a brass pot, and filtered the coffee grounds out of her brew. The result was revolutionary: a smoother, cleaner cup, free of sediment and bitterness. And so, the modern coffee filter was born.

More than 100 years later, Melitta®’s invention remains a cornerstone of great coffee, and at Wabilogic, we’re proud to carry that tradition forward - not just in name, but in practice.

Why We Don’t Include a Permanent Filter?

In a world that often emphasizes reusability and convenience, it may seem surprising that we don’t include a built-in, reusable mesh filter in your drip coffee maker. Here’s why:

1. For Your Health: Paper Filters Reduce Cholesterol-Raising Compounds

One of the biggest advantages of paper filters is their ability to trap cafestol - a compound found in coffee oils. Research from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Harvard University suggests that cafestol can raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels when consumed regularly.

Permanent metal filters and unfiltered brewing methods (like French press or Turkish coffee) allow cafestol to pass through into your cup. But paper filters catch it, reducing your intake of this compound significantly.

For daily coffee drinkers, using paper filters can support better heart health over time.

2. For Better Flavor: Cleaner, Brighter Coffee

Coffee is made up of hundreds of flavor compounds - some delicate, some bold. While metal filters allow more oils and fine particles through (resulting in a fuller-bodied brew), paper filters produce a cup with more clarity, sweetness, and aroma.

If you love nuanced notes - like citrus, florals, chocolate, or berries - then paper filters help highlight them by eliminating the “muddy” aftertaste that can come from residual fines.

At Wabilogic, we believe that coffee should taste clean, smooth, and expressive, especially when brewed with care. Filter paper brings that experience to life.

3. For Ease and Cleanliness

Paper filters are low-maintenance. Simply toss them (or compost them) after use - no need to scrub, rinse, or deal with oils clogging up a mesh filter over time.

This not only makes your morning easier, but also ensures that every brew starts fresh, without lingering residue from previous cups.

4. For Brand Integrity and Respect

Our brewers are branded with Melitta®, a name that stands for innovation, tradition, and coffee craftsmanship. Including a metal mesh filter would go against the very history and essence of what Melitta® represents.

By using Melitta® paper filters, we honor the origin story of modern coffee brewing and invite users to be part of that legacy. Every cup you brew with a paper filter is a quiet tribute to Melitta Bentz’s ingenuity - and to the clean, balanced coffee she dreamed of.

Backed by Science: Health Benefits of Filtered Coffee

Numerous scientific studies support the use of paper filters for health-conscious coffee drinkers:

  • A 2020 study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that filtered coffee is associated with lower mortality rates compared to unfiltered brews.

  • The American Heart Association recommends filtered over unfiltered coffee for individuals concerned about cholesterol levels.

  • A Harvard Health report noted that using a paper filter can lower the amount of cafestol by up to 95%.

So if you’re drinking coffee every day (like many of us do), choosing filter paper is a simple, evidence-based step toward a healthier lifestyle.

Are Paper Filters Eco-Friendly?

You might wonder: isn’t using paper filters wasteful?

Not necessarily. Most Melitta® filters are made from biodegradable and compostable paper. Many customers compost both the used filter and grounds in their garden or local green bin.

Plus, filter paper avoids the long-term waste of replacing clogged or damaged metal filters, which often end up in landfills.

In fact, some lifecycle assessments suggest that high-quality compostable paper filters may have a lower environmental impact than reusable options - especially when considering the water, soap, and energy used to clean metal filters.

What’s Included with Your Wabilogic Coffee Maker?

We include a trial pack of 5 Melitta® paper filters with every drip coffee maker to get you started right away. These filters are:

  • Precisely sized for your Wabilogic coffee maker

How to Use a Paper Filter (Quick Guide)

  1. Open the filter cone and place a Melitta® filter inside.

  2. Rinse the filter with hot water (optional) to remove any papery taste and pre-warm your brewer.

  3. Add your ground coffee (typically 2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water).

  4. Brew as usual - automatically or manually.

  5. After brewing, discard or compost the used filter and grounds.

It’s that easy - and that rewarding.

Conclusion: A Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference

Coffee filter paper may seem like a minor part of your drip coffee maker setup - but in truth, it plays a major role in health, flavor, and heritage.

At Wabilogic, we didn’t include a permanent filter because we believe in brewing better. In honoring Melitta®’s century-old invention, we’re inviting you to rediscover the simplicity, purity, and enjoyment of truly well-made coffee.

So go ahead - brew with purpose, one filter at a time.
