Cappuccino vs Latte: The Key Differences | Wabilogic

What is Cappuccino?

A cappuccino is a classic Italian coffee drink that consists of equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. This results in a strong coffee flavor with a rich, velvety texture. The traditional cappuccino is smaller in size compared to a latte, typically around 6 ounces, and is known for its thick layer of foam on top.

What is Latte?

A latte, or caffè latte, is another popular Italian coffee drink that features a higher ratio of steamed milk to espresso, resulting in a creamier and milder flavor. Typically, a latte consists of one-third espresso and two-thirds steamed milk, topped with a small amount of milk foam.

Milk Ratio and Texture

Cappuccinos and lattes differ in their milk ratio and texture. Cappuccinos have equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam, offering a balanced and bold flavor with a fluffy texture. Lattes, on the other hand, have more steamed milk, resulting in a smoother, creamier texture with less foam.

The milk in lattes is stretched to a "wet paint" consistency, allowing for intricate latte art, while cappuccinos have milk stretched further to achieve a "liquid marshmallow" texture.

Serving Size

Cappuccinos are served in smaller 6-ounce cups to highlight the strong espresso flavor, while lattes are larger, ranging from 12 to 16 ounces, offering a more substantial drink with a milder coffee taste.

Which One is Sweeter?

Lattes are naturally sweeter than cappuccinos due to their higher milk content, which brings out the milk's inherent sweetness during the steaming process.

Comparing Caffeine Content

Both cappuccinos and lattes have the same espresso and caffeine content. A 16-ounce serving of either contains about 173 mg of caffeine, though cappuccinos taste stronger due to less milk.

Which One to Choose?

Choosing between a cappuccino and a latte depends on your taste and texture preferences. Cappuccinos have a stronger coffee flavor and rich foam, ideal for bold espresso lovers. Lattes are creamier and milder, perfect for adding flavors and experimenting with syrups and milk alternatives. Your choice should reflect your desired coffee strength and flavor.
