Durian coffee is a bold, highly unique beverage that fuses the intense, pungent character of Southeast Asia's "King of Fruits" with the robust bitterness of coffee. This specialty drink is incredibly popular in countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, where the naturally rich, custard-like texture and sweet, complex flavor of durian—which carries notes of almonds, sweet onion, and caramel—are used to cut through strong roasts. The outcome is an oddly harmonious, velvety drink where the natural fats of the durian mimic heavy cream, elevating the coffee's bitterness into a rich, sweet, and tropical experience that durian lovers describe as absolute glory.
To make durian coffee at home, you typically blend fresh or frozen durian pulp directly into your milk base to create an incredibly smooth fruit-milk mixture. Start by combining about 2 to 4 ounces of ripe durian flesh with 4 to 6 ounces of your choice of milk (such as whole milk or coconut milk) and a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk in a blender until completely liquified. Pour this thick, aromatic durian cream into a glass filled with ice, and then slowly float a double shot of strong espresso or traditional Vietnamese phin-brewed coffee over the top. Stirring the layers together yields a sweet, deeply fragrant, and intensely creamy caffeinated treat.

2–3 oz fresh or frozen durian fruit pulp (ensure the seeds are completely removed)
1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk (adjust based on how sweet your durian is)
1 double shot (2 oz) of strong espresso OR traditional Vietnamese Robusta coffee
4–5 oz milk (whole milk or coconut milk complements the tropical flavor perfectly)
Ice cubes
Add the fresh durian pulp, sweetened condensed milk, and your liquid milk of choice into a high-powered blender. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds until the fruit completely breaks down and emulsifies into a smooth, thick, custard-like durian cream.
Pour the thick, fragrant durian cream directly into the bottom of a tall serving glass. Drop a handful of ice cubes into the glass to chill the base.
Freshly brew your double shot of espresso or strong Vietnamese coffee. Slowly and gently pour the hot coffee over the top layer of ice so it floats beautifully above the pale yellow durian cream.
Take a moment to admire the striking color contrast. Use a straw or a long spoon to mix the layers thoroughly before drinking so the velvety, sweet durian perfectly balances the bold, bitter coffee.
