Why Does Coffee Make You Poop?
Coffee can trigger bowel movements by waking up the digestive system. It increases muscle contractions in the colon, a process called peristalsis, which moves waste through the intestines faster. That is why many people feel the need to use the bathroom soon after a cup.
Caffeine helps, but it is not the only cause. Even decaf coffee can produce similar results, which suggests that other compounds in the drink also play a role. These include acids and hormones such as gastrin, which can speed digestive activity. Drinking it on an empty stomach may make this response stronger because the gut is more sensitive without food. For most people, this reaction is normal and harmless. But people with sensitive digestion or IBS may notice more urgency or loose stools. Drinking less or having it with food may ease discomfort.
