Portuguese Mazagran is a refreshing, historic iced coffee drink often dubbed the world's original iced coffee, tracing its roots back to 19th-century Algeria before becoming widely popular in Portugal. This unique beverage combines strong, dark coffee or espresso with the bright, citrusy punch of fresh lemon juice, sweetened to taste with sugar, honey, or simple syrup. Served over a generous amount of ice, the sharp acidity of the lemon beautifully cuts through the natural bitterness of the coffee, resulting in an incredibly crisp, energizing, and thirst-quenching drink that is perfect for warm weather.
To make a traditional Portuguese Mazagran, start by brewing a strong double shot of espresso or preparing about 120ml of highly concentrated cold brew coffee. In a tall glass, combine one to two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice with your choice of sweetener, such as simple syrup or honey, stirring until fully dissolved. Fill the glass to the brim with ice cubes, pour the prepared coffee slowly over the top to create a beautiful layered look, and stir well to chill it instantly. For an effervescent twist, you can top the drink off with a splash of sparkling water or tonic, and garnish the glass with a fresh lemon wheel before serving.
