Wabi Coffee Recipes: Durian Coffee

What is Durian Coffee?

Durian coffee is a bold, highly unique beverage that fuses the intense, pungent character of Southeast Asia's "King of Fruits" with the robust bitterness of coffee. This specialty drink is incredibly popular in countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, where the naturally rich, custard-like texture and sweet, complex flavor of durian—which carries notes of almonds, sweet onion, and caramel—are used to cut through strong roasts. The outcome is an oddly harmonious, velvety drink where the natural fats of the durian mimic heavy cream, elevating the coffee's bitterness into a rich, sweet, and tropical experience that durian lovers describe as absolute glory.

How to make a Durian Coffee?

To make durian coffee at home, you typically blend fresh or frozen durian pulp directly into your milk base to create an incredibly smooth fruit-milk mixture. Start by combining about 2 to 4 ounces of ripe durian flesh with 4 to 6 ounces of your choice of milk (such as whole milk or coconut milk) and a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk in a blender until completely liquified. Pour this thick, aromatic durian cream into a glass filled with ice, and then slowly float a double shot of strong espresso or traditional Vietnamese phin-brewed coffee over the top. Stirring the layers together yields a sweet, deeply fragrant, and intensely creamy caffeinated treat.
